Set within the battle scarred yet proud town of Harasta in the Rif Dimashq countryside outside Damascus, this mosque combined with a secondary school honours the great martyr of Uhud, Hamza ibn Abd al Muttalib, may God be pleased with him, the paternal uncle and devoted companion of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, whose courage at the early battles of Islam earned him the title Lion of God. Harasta is part of the fertile Ghouta oasis ring encircling Damascus, historically celebrated for its apricot, walnut, and pomegranate orchards, and its residents have long combined agricultural livelihoods with the artisan crafts of the capital. The Rif Dimashq countryside carries deep Islamic memory, for its villages witnessed the earliest Umayyad expansion and later the Mamluk and Ottoman eras that shaped the classical Damascene aesthetic. Architecturally the mosque follows the enduring Levantine idiom, featuring honeyed limestone walls, a small central dome, a stone minaret, and a courtyard bordered by the classrooms of the attached thanawiyya. Inside the prayer hall, mihrab mosaic work recalls the wider Damascene craft tradition, and the minbar is carved in local walnut. Daily prayers draw students returning to the school, shopkeepers reopening after hardship, and elders whose faithfulness has endured immense trials. The Friday khutbah focuses on patience, steadfastness, and the mercy of God upon those who remain firm. Ramadan is celebrated with simple iftars of fattoush, yalanji, and mujaddara when resources allow, and the night prayers extend past midnight. The two Eids bring families together in a spirit of gratitude for survival and hope for renewal. The school functions alongside the mosque, offering secular and Islamic studies to young people rebuilding their future. Visitors travelling from Damascus can reach Harasta by a short drive along the Aleppo highway and may also explore the classical orchards and the Saydnaya monastery hills nearby. The attached secondary school, though scarred by the violence of recent years, continues educating its students with quiet determination. Teachers volunteer extra hours to compensate for lost curriculum time, and graduates frequently return to teach younger pupils. Weekly tafsir circles draw elders who remember the pre conflict Ghouta as a garden of fruits and peace. The imam offers counselling for trauma, family disputes, and the many grief related questions that weigh on every household. The mosque's quiet resilience stands as a profound proof that faith survives when stones and buildings fall around it throughout these days.
